Tips on Addressing Your Inner and Outer Envelopes

When addressing your guests and invitees, there are many things to keep in mind. Apart from your wedding invitations and how it is worded, etiquette also includes what should and should not be done, so that you are courteous as well as ensure that the right message is sent across.

Inner Envelopes

When it comes to the inner envelopes, please keep the following tips in mind.

  • Make sure to exclude the first names of your invitees. Example :

Mr. and Mrs. Smith

  • Make sure to write the first names of the children (if invited) below the names of the parents by according of age. Example;

Mr. and Mrs. Smith

Karen, John and Elizabeth

  • Children who are over the age of eighteen (18) should receive their own invitation
  • If you are planning an adults-only wedding, then opt to omit the children’s names
  • If you are inviting a guest with a ‘plus one’ but do not know the name of the guest, you may address you inner envelope as the following;

Outer Envelopes

When it comes to the outer envelopes, please keep the following tips in mind.

  • Address your guests and invitees using their full names and formal titles. Make sure you do not abbreviate the titles except for the likes of “Mr., Mrs., Ms., and Jr.”
  • It is always recommended that you do not use symbols and always spell out the word “and.”
  • Make sure you do not use initials and spell out all names.
  • If you are inviting children or an unknown escort, and you have addressed them in the inner envelope, make sure you do not include it on the outer envelope, that is, the likes of “and Family” or “and Guest” should not be included in the outer envelope.
  • You should only use figure or numerals when addressing house number or zip codes. Example;

  • Spell or write out the words such as “Street, Road, Boulevard, Lane, Avenue, etc.”
  • Make sure not to abbreviate state names.
